Hernán Meschi was born in Chile in 1927. A dentist by profession, he began painting in the mid 1950s. He traveled to Florence where he studied Renaissance painting, but he is mainly self-taught.
His paintings show an almost metaphysical realism. In them, the stylized figures are modeled as sculptures. He uses delicate light, thus creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
Through careful and accurate work, he combines images of myths of Western culture. Artists, heroes and saints are interwoven in a montage that does not neglect balance and composition. The result is a fascinating and disturbing imagery. Hernan Meschi can be considered one of the most original Latin American Surrealists.
